When you need it

Where escape routes need lighting, the Fire Safety Order requires emergency lighting that works if the normal supply fails, and the responsible person must keep it maintained. The recognised regime under BS 5266-1 is a brief functional test every month and a test for the full rated duration once a year, with the results kept in a log book.

The full duration test drains the batteries, so the lighting gives little cover until it recharges. We plan the test for a time when the building is empty or other lighting is available.

Included

Questions

Can staff do the monthly test?

Yes. Monthly checks are commonly carried out by the responsible person or staff, using the test key switch and recording the result. The annual full duration test is usually done by a competent person.

Why does the annual test take so long?

Each fitting has to run on its battery for its full rated duration, often three hours, to show it would last through an evacuation.

Does a block of flats need emergency lighting?

Many do, on common stairs and corridors. The fire risk assessment decides where it is needed.
